What is Self Discovery Self Defense?
Self Discovery Self Defense is a one-of-a-kind self-defense and self-discovery experience that combines the principles of martial arts training with awareness and trauma-informed practices.

That means we can walk you through not only the physical aspects of self defense,
but also the mental and emotional work that it takes to
feel safe from the inside out.
We offer a variety of training options and services ranging from private and group lessons
(including self defense, ground work, and weapons defenses)
to team building and empowerment events for small businesses.

Meet Sifu Marcie
Marcie Wombold, Ed.D.
Founder and Instructor, Self Discovery Self Defense
Known to her students as Sifu Marcie, Marcie Wombold is an educator, martial arts instructor, and National Board Certified Teacher. She earned her Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California and brings more than twenty years of teaching and coaching experience to SDSD.
Her martial arts background includes Jeet Kune Do, Filipino martial arts, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Marcie earned Mastery Level (Level 12) at Leading Edge Kickboxing and Martial Arts in SeaTac, Washington. She was one of only four students to complete the school’s mastery-level training.
Marcie designs learning around the people participating - their goals, experience, and questions. Her teaching connects physical practice with awareness, reflection, and exploration of our strengths, boundaries, and choices. Through explanation, practice, conversation, and opportunities to try again, she helps participants explore how a skill works and what they discover about themselves while learning.
Marcie is a member of the Association of Women Martial Arts Instructors (AWMAI).
